A quick look at the vineyards between one rain shower and the next during this strange stormy summer 🙂

During spring, vegetative development was further ahead than usual for a while but all the rain that we have had, coupled with the lack of hours of sunshine, have extended the vegetative cycle of the vines.

For the moment there are marked differences in veraison from one vine to another.

We had sunburn on the only two really hot days of this strange summer.

The best news so far is that (touch wood) we’ve had no hailstorms.

-Pinot nero is the grape that I’m happiest with right now. It’s very evenly developed and healthy, and the leaves are free from downy mildew despite the fact that the vineyards are situated at low altitudes in cool spots.

-the Dolcetto has been affected by the rain and the grapes are becoming unusually big, increasing the compactness of the bunch. At this point, more rain is really going to be a cause for concern. Tomorrow we’ll be thinning the bunches.

-the Brachetto depends from vineyard to vineyard and is the grape that has been affected most so far by the lack of sun. It looks like this is the grape that is furthest behind. In some areas, vegetation is still flourishing. It needs thinning.

-for the Barbera, things are more complicated as I have lots of different vineyards in different soils and of different ages.
Oddly enough, if we were to get some good weather now, it would be the grape to be least affected by the awful weather of July.
I expect to start thinning the Barbera after the 15th of August and at the moment I’m concentrating on defending the small new leaves that are appearing towards the top of the vines.

-for the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon it’s still too early to comment.
