About old vineyards of #Barbera

11 agosto 2014

How much do we know about old vineyards, those planted before 1965-1970?

They have lots of unique  particularities, such as the fact that they are an ecosystem of sometimes very different individuals, despite being grouped together under the name  #Barbera.

This photo shows a bunch of #Barbera grapes from the Cec vineyard, planted in 1960.

It looks like a bonsai  Barbera which has possibly survived as a carrier of some unknown virosis which makes it vegetate or develop like this.

It could be that we don’t know which clone or type of Barbera it belongs to, in that the clobal selection and studies on the variety began much later.

All of this means tgat the farmer has to employ greater and specific sensitivity when managing old vineyards. In these vineyards, it’s always extremely difficult to establish the best harvesting date, and a considerable amount of experience is required in order to mediate among so many different plants.

But, I love this game!
