The Gladiator

Poetry of the past.
He really was The Gladiator.
The past brought to mind by a photo.
The realisation that nowadays we make the same choices as we did in the past, but for different reasons.

Cascina Garitina is – as the name says – a “cascina”, which is Italian for farmhouse, and the estate used to generate a variety of products, like all the farms of the past.
Alongside the vineyards and, consequently, the cellar, was the general farming of Piedmont veal, as well as other livestock, such as cows, goats, pigs, hens and rabbits, for the family itself.
This was typical of the local hills and valleys.

The vineyards occupied the best positions, while the stable seed crops and meadows were on the lower land.
Barley, wheat, corn, hay and alfalfa were the most popular crops and while they took time and energy away from the vineyards, they completed the farm cycle perfectly.

In the mid-80s, it became too expensive to keep a shed of 20 cows, so the decision  was made to shut down this part of the farm.
In this area, it is now really hard to find a field of barley next to a vineyard, but when I when I see one, my granddad comes to mind.

Proud as a gladiator when he saw the plentiful harvest gathered into sheaves waiting to be threshed.
It was a job he was all too familiar with because he had a threshing machine for years and he used to go from farm to farm, threshing the wheat at all hours of the day and night, with the noise of the ORSI “Testa Calda” tractor letting everyone know exactly what was going on.

The whole family was involved in the work at hand and home cured meats, salamis and wine were put out to welcome and feed the threshers.
Then times changed – but our praise should go to those who want to uphold these traditions and the historical landscape.
Nature speaks to us and reminds us of our roots.
We cannot know who we are without knowing about the past.

Poesia del passato.
Era davvero Il Gladiatore.
Da una foto ricordare il passato.
Ricordare come si facciano ora le stesse scelte del passato pur con motivazioni diverse.
Cascina Garitina é appunto una cascina cioè era una proprietà ad economia promiscua come tutte le aziende del passato.
Accanto all’economia della vigna e della conseguente cantina, c’era l’economia generata dall’allevamento del vitello piemontese e c’era l’economia mista minima indispensabile per sfamare il nucleo famigliare: la vacca, la capra, i maiali, le galline ed i conigli.
Tutto questo caraterizzò molto la collina ed il fondovalle del nostro territorio.
Le vigne nelle posizioni migliori, i seminativi ed i prati stabili nelle zone più basse.
Orzo, grano, mais, fieno ed erba medica erano le colture più diffuse che spesso sottraevano tempo e fatica alla vigna ma che chiudevano in maniera perfetta il cerchio aziendale.
A metà degli anni ’80 divenne antieconomico mantenere una stalla con 20 capi e si decise di dismettere l’allevamento.
Nella nostra zona ora é molto più difficile trovare un campo di orzo al fianco di una vigna ma quando succede mi viene in mente mio nonno.
Fiero come un gladiatore quando vedeva la messe abbondante ed ammucchiata in covoni in attesa della battitura.
Era un lavoro che lui conosceva bene perché per anni ha avuto una trebbiatrice e girava le cascine a battere il grano con orari quasi disumani ai nostri tempi, anche se il rumore del trattore testacalda Orsi annunciava la festa.
Tutti i componenti della famiglia erano impegnati nelle operazioni ed i salumi fatti in casa ed il vino erano il sostentamento ed il benvenuto dei trebbiatori.
Poi i tempi cambiarono ma lode a chi vuole mantenere tradizione e paesaggi storici.
La natura ci parla e ci ricorda le nostre radici.
Non possiamo sapere chi siamo senza conoscere il passato.
