August Anguish

After two months of very hot, dry weather, the famous cut off we were all expecting has wreaked havoc on our hills.
The damage could be considerable, due to the fact that we are so near to the grape harvest and the vine has very little time to recover.
The damage always occurs in spots here and there because, fortunately, there are always several hail clouds and they are unstable.

This time however, an extensive area has been affected, to varying extents from place to place.  
I won’t post the pictures of the vineyards that have been completely devastated, because there’s nothing that can be done to repair the damage and it breaks my heart to see them.
In the Castel Boglione area there were two different stormy fronts that brought two separate hailstorms and, fortunately hailstones as large as walnuts hammered down only briefly.
The gale force winds, with the formation of almost tornado-like conditions, ripped up plants and road signs all over the place.
As far as damage in the vineyards is concerned, on average about 10 to 30 berries have been damaged on every bunch, particularly in vineyards exposed north-south, because the storm approached from west, southwest.
What we see immediately is the difference in the damage endured by the bunches that are already ripe in comparison to those that are still green.

The photos compares the smaller San Martino bunches, which have been completely destroyed, and those that are ripening, which have suffered less.
This is because their skin is more supple and the vines were suffering from hydric stress, with consequently less turgid bunches and berries, so they behaved a bit like rubber.
So what are we going to do now?
Urgent copper-based treatments are necessary to disinfect the vines and help them heal, and then, if the weather is on our side, we will eliminate the damaged berries, which we hope will have dried up.
There was heavy hail on the night of the 9th of August 2002 too and this is a far from happy coincidence, because it was followed by 20 days of rain and the harvest was completely wiped out in some vineyards. 
But this is 2015, the year of the century for those NOT employed in the sector, so it will definitely be different to 2002.

E dopo 2 mesi di caldo e siccità,  la famosa e prevista goccia fredda ha fatto i suoi danni sulle nostre colline.

Danni che potrebbero risultare importanti vista la vicinanza alla vendemmia e lo scarso tempo di recupero che avrà la vite.

Come sempre accade i danni sono stati a macchia di leopardo perché, per fortuna, le nubi grandinigene sono diverse ed instabili.

Ha grandinato in aree vaste però con diverse incidenza.

Non metterò le foto dei vigneti dove il danno é stato del 100% perché mi piange il cuore e realmente li non c’è più nulla da fare.

Zona Castel Boglione ci sono stati 2 diversi fronti temporaleschi con grandine in due riprese e, per fortuna, i chicchi grandi come noci sono durati poco.

É stata una mezza tromba d’aria con piante e cartelli divelti.

In media in vigna i danni sono dai 10 ai 30 acini colpiti per grappolo soprattutto nelle vigne con disposizione nord-sud siccome il temporale si é approcciato da ovest sud-ovest.

La cosa che salta agli occhi é il diverso danno subito dai grappoli già maturi in confronto a quelli ancora acerbi.

In foto il raffronto é con i grappolini di San Martino che sono andati totalmente distrutti mentre i grappoli in maturazione manifestano un danno minore.

Questo perché la buccia é più elastica e le viti erano in crisi idrica quindi presentavano grappoli ed acini poco turgidi che si sono comportati un po come gomma.

Cosa faremo ora?

Trattamento urgente a base di rame per sfruttare la sua azione disinfettante e cicatrizzante e poi, se il meteo ci aiuta, passeremo ad eliminare gli acini colpiti che si spera secchino.

Anche nel 2002 grandinò in maniera pesante la notte del 9 Agosto e non mi piace molto come coincidenza perché allora seguirono 20 giornate di pioggia ed in alcuni vigneti non si vendemmiò.

Ma quest’anno é l’annata 2015, del secolo per tanti NON addetti ai lavori, per cui andrà a finire diversamente dalla 2002.
